sensing carbon

Climate change is the most pressing issue of our time. How are our cities learning to adapt and mitigate the impacts of climate change by transitioning to more sustainable energy systems?

The City of Melbourne is taking steps to go completely carbon neutral. But carbon is still an integral part of everything we are and do. It matters how we live with and understand the role of carbon in our everyday life in the city.

In this workshop, we invited young people to construct a physical 'carbonscape' of statistics and strategies to explore Melbourne’s push to carbon neutrality in a tactile and visual way. A powergrid was laid. Office towers were built. Roads were used to join the towers. Forests were planted in other parts Australia (and the world) to offset Melbourne's carbon emissions. All these elements came to demonstrate Melbourne’s carbon footprint and carbon-reducing strategies, while also providing a platform for imagining alternative ways of conceiving urban architecture for human and nonhuman communities alike.
This program was delivered by the M_curator program, in collaboration with artist-researchers from Local Alternatives and the Creative Agency Lab at RMIT.
